Jardim Botânico Mae Fa Luang. (TAILÂNDIA)

 SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Heligan Locals' Pass Now On Sale

As we look ahead to an exciting year of changes throughout the gardens and estate, we invite you to join us on the journey as we launch our first ever Locals' Pass for all Cornish residents.

Exclusively throughout March, we are inviting locals to sign up for our Local’s Pass; enabling unlimited garden access throughout the year; for the cost of one normal garden admission charge.
"In 2014 we welcomed 7000 people drawn from the three parishes that border Heligan to commemorate the outbreak of WW1 in a moving large scale theatre piece that underscored the inter connectedness of the area. It was a powerful reminder that while we are stewards of this, possibly the most romantic garden in Britain, a little bit of all of us is woven into its fabric and we wanted to strengthen our local bonds even further by creating our first locals pass so people can come and go as they want and refer with warmth and pride to "their" Heligan" -  Sir Tim Smit
With a fantastic calendar of family and garden specific events throughout the year, as well as the unique seasonal beauty and intrigue that Heligan has to offer there’s always something to fascinate and entertain whatever the weather.
*Locals need to bring photo ID and proof of Cornish residency (eg driver’s licence and utility bill) to take up this incredible offer.
*Heligan Annual Membership remains a completely separate membership category, with many additional benefits that the Locals' Pass does not include. For further information regarding Heligan Membership and its benefits, please click here.

Spring at The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Spring is in the air and the first phase of our exciting winter transformation is now complete!

Instead of walking through the Covered Area on your next visit, we now invite you to buy your tickets at our new Ticket Office which can be found where Plant Sales used to be.

Further afield, you can now see areas of the garden that you might not have seen before! The route of our Jungle boardwalk has changed and now links the bottom of the Jungle to the mysterious Lost Valley. Before entering the Lost Valley, duck and dive under ancient rhododendron branches while seeing the bottom of the Jungle from a new perspective.
Within the last few days one of our Tamworth sows has given birth to nine piglets bringing even more young life into the Wider Estate. Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages to find out when you can come and meet them.
Our Devon & Cornwall Longwool lambs are now roaming free in Park-An-Lann and amusing passers-by as they skip and leap through the daffodils.
It may only be the start of March, but there is still plenty to see throughout the gardens and estate. The pastel pinks of ourMagnolia campbellii now compliment some very early Cornish Red Rhododendrons on Flora’s Green. Some of our finest camellias are now in bloom and we highly recommend popping into the Flower Garden to see perfect row upon row of Tête-à-Tête Narcissus.

Cornwall Fruit Focus -‘Past Experience – Future Knowledge’

Saturday 19th March -10am – 5pm  (£25 (on the day) including a pasty lunch – £20 for students).

In this event at the Eden Project we explore if past experiences have roles to play when applied to future problems?  Challenges to food (and fruit) supply in the UK include, climate change a mismatch between food prices and farm incomes, imminently rising wage costs, erosion of horticultural skills and a shortage of good land coming on to the market.
Stephen Briggs of Abacus Organic Consultants considers can agroforestry systems contribute to diversified farm income and adaption to climate change?
Andrew Tinsley from AHDB highlights the current state of horticulture and what glimmers of hope are there for the future?
Chris Rose (Chris Rose Associates) shares his expertise on horticultural labour forces working together more effectively.
Anyone who is seriously interested in the craft of cider making will know......
Andrew Lea, widely known by craft cider makers from his book and web site, relates the history of cider making and considers possible future trends based on UK and overseas developments.
Nick Millard from Michelmore Hughes and Reading University an expert on land valuation and Rebecca Marshall, of the Community Land Advisory Service will consider what are the pros and cons of buying or renting land and how this may relate to perennial crops and market gardens?

Philippe Parageaud from FAST Ltd will be talking about modern commercial nursery fruit crop production systems.
Our very own Head of Gardens and Estate Iain Davies and Andrew Ormerod will be shedding light on propagation techniques with potential for revival.
There will also be a soapbox session for short presentations for anyone wishing to share a fruit or horticulture related success story or to air a problem.

Menacuddle Well

We would like to share news of St Austell’s very own Lost Valley that needs your help!

A heritage site in St Austell that has been neglected over the years is set to get a new lease of life thanks to the efforts of volunteers and a grant of at least £8,000 from Tesco.

Menacuddle Well - a 15th century, Grade II listed holy well whose water was once believed to have healing powers and to bring good luck – can be found in an overgrown ornamental garden just to the north of St Austell.

The well was restored in the 1920s as a tribute to a member of the Sawle family of the Menacuddle estate who was killed in the First World War. It is now in need of some tender, loving care.
The Friends of Menacuddle Well has been set up under the auspices of St Austell Renewables (STAR) to oversee its restoration and ensure future maintenance, and has been awarded the grant from Tesco's Bags of Help fund to go towards funding the project.

The full cost of the project is expected to reach about £12,000 and the Friends group is hoping people will vote for Menacuddle Well at their local Tesco store as the supermarket invites people to decide which of three chosen projects in Cornwall will get the top available grant of £12,000 with the second getting £10,000 and the third, £8,000.

Once the initial project has been completed, the volunteers will be looking to extend their work to the surrounding area including the Tudor Bapistery and the so-called 'Lost Pond' that needs clearing out.

More volunteers would be very welcome and can find the group on Facebook or contact Wendy Earl on 01726 72861 or at wendyearl@talktalk.net.
